Questions
Where do my notes live?
In a vault: an ordinary folder of Markdown files, with ink and attachments beside them. You choose where it is. On iPhone and iPad it can live inside Squill’s own folder (visible in the Files app under On My iPhone or On My iPad), in iCloud Drive, or in any folder a Files provider offers. On the Mac it is any folder you pick.
Squill keeps its own state, such as the search index, in a hidden .squill folder inside the vault. That folder is a cache you can delete; it rebuilds. Existing plain-Markdown vaults, including ones made with Obsidian, open as they are (Squill is not affiliated with Obsidian).
How do I sync between my devices?
Sync is off until you turn it on, per vault, in Settings › Sync. There are two ways:
- iCloud. Your vault replicates through your own private iCloud database. Everything is sealed on your device with the vault’s own key before it leaves, so Apple stores only ciphertext. Your other devices get the key through iCloud Keychain, a pairing code or a recovery key.
- A shared folder. Point Squill at a folder that another tool keeps in step (a file server, a sync tool you trust). The same sealed format is used, so the folder never holds readable notes.
You can also simply keep a vault in a synced folder and let that tool sync the plain files. Edits made on two devices at once merge, including ink, and earlier versions of each note stay on your device.
How do I export everything?
Your vault already is the export: plain Markdown files you can copy anywhere. For a single file, use Settings › Sync › Export Vault as Zip…, which saves every note, ink drawing and attachment in one zip that any app can read. Ink also exports to an open, documented JSON format, SVG and vector PDF, and notes export to PDF, HTML, Markdown, LaTeX and Word.
The format is an open specification: see the vault format.
What do you collect?
Nothing. There is no account, no analytics and no Squill server. Nothing leaves your device unless you turn on a feature that needs the network, and the app shows every host it has contacted in Settings › Network. The full story is in the privacy policy.
I set up a new device and it cannot read my synced vault.
The new device needs the vault’s key. If iCloud Keychain is on, it arrives on its own after a moment. Otherwise open Settings › Sync on a device that has the vault and choose Pair Another Device…, or enter the recovery key you saved. If no device has the key and there is no recovery key, nobody, including us, can decrypt the cloud copy; any device that still has the vault can upload it again with Re-upload from This Device….
How do I report a security issue?
Privately, please, through GitHub security advisories (the repository’s Security tab, then Report a vulnerability). Do not open a public issue. The security policy explains what to include and how quickly we respond.
I found a bug or want a feature.
Open an issue on GitHub, or write to us. Please never attach real notes; a small made-up example is perfect. The Sync Doctor report in Settings › Sync is safe to share: it contains no note text, file names or keys.
